Some people love the winter because they enjoy winter sports, playing in the snow, or hiking even when you can’t feel your fingers. Others think those people are nuts. They want to pull the covers over their head and close their eyes until spring. This is for that group. When the temperature drops and you’re resigned to spending the day indoors, here are a few ways to make it a little more cozy.

Buy Yourself a New Blanket

A cold day is the perfect time to snuggle up with a warm, soft blanket. While you’re sure to have a favorite around the house, nothing perks up a cold night like treating yourself to a brand-new one. Look for something that you don’t already have maybe a weighted blanket, an electric blanket, or a luxurious fabric like faux fur or plush sherpa. As long as it’s something new that you can get excited to snuggle up with.

Catch Up on Your Reading

When it’s cold out, there's nothing quite as comforting as settling in with a good book. It's a simple pleasure, but getting lost in a story helps the outside world fade into the background. Whether you’re curled up by the fireplace or nestled in a favorite chair, chilly weather is the perfect excuse to indulge in the introspective luxury of getting lost in a book. If you can’t quite sit still that long, try an audiobook

Make Fancy Warm Drinks

Cold weather plus a warm beverage equals a perfectly comforting combination. Hot cocoa is a natural choice but you can make it more of an event by skipping the packet of power and making it from scratch. Make a classic homemade hot cocoa or try a version with a healthy boost of turmeric or level up to a cinnamon and cacao latte. Not in the mood for chocolate? How about ginger hibiscus tea or honey apple cider? Pick anything you want, as long as you get to enjoy the pure happiness of holding a warm cup.

Update Your Winter Wardrobe

Put on something cozy. Remember why you love it, and go internet shopping for something new that’s just as comfortable. Whether it’s a pair of fuzzy pants or a warm sweater, whatever you choose can tell you a lot about what makes you feel relaxed and bundled up. Already have too many of what you’re wearing? Then maybe it’s time to cull the collection. Anything worn out, or that doesn’t quite fit anymore can go. That will make more room for you to grab yourself a new version or get that cold-weather essential your wardrobe is missing.

Try a New Soup

Is there any better time to make homemade soup than a cold winter day? Fine, fall days work too. Because whenever there’s a chill in the air, soup belongs in the pot. Create a classic chicken noodle or something slightly spicy like potato curry or carrot masala or even a clarifying winter detox soup. Anything with a warm broth will heat you up from the inside to help you forget the cold.

Make Summer Plans

Take your mind off the weather outside by dreaming of sunny days. In a perfect world you’d be able to plan a near-future escape to a tropical destination, and if it’s in your budget, go for it. Start packing. But if you can’t jet off to warmer climates right now, just thinking ahead can help you forget the current cold. Find somewhere in your area you can visit during the summer, shop for a new bathing suit, or look up some recipes to try on the grill at your first summer BBQ. Pick your favorite summer activity and make some plans to do it. It’s distracting, it’s productive and it gives you something to look forward to.

Get Your Bake On

Baking warms up the heart and the home. It can be hard to do a lot of baking in the summer because sometimes the oven may throw off extra heat, but in the winter that’s a bonus. Anything that needs to be baked will fit the bill, cookies, cakes, bread, whatever you love. A cold day is a great excuse for baked goods and will help you and everyone else forget the weather, at least for as long as it takes to eat.

You don’t have to dread the freezing days, especially if you get to stay home. When it gets cold outside hunker down and indulge in some homemade foods and home shopping.
