If the eyes are the window to the soul, then your eyelashes are definitely the curtains. And any interior designer will tell you, the right window treatment can make an attractive room downright spectacular. Well, the same is true of your eyelashes.

Lashes are one of the most delicate, yet beautiful parts of the face - on men and women, actually. But as women, we’re always looking to maximize our features and are willing to go to any length (literally) to make sure we protect, grow and nourish our locks and lashes.

Eyelashes have been having their moment the past few years with eyelash extensions, lifts and tints making their way onto the à la carte services menu at many salons and spas. But unfortunately, these services are often expensive and require a lot of routine maintenance. And, the other alternative of applying a pair of false lashes before a girl’s night out is time consuming, potentially messy, difficult to do on your own and quite frankly, a pain. If you’ve ever spent an evening trying to reapply a sticky eyelash or accidentally gotten an eye full of glue… you know what we mean.

So, if you’re looking to take a more natural route to lengthen your lashes, there are several ways to get thicker and fuller lashes at home.

Add a dash of olive oil

Yeah, we’re serious. Aside from being an essential ingredient in the kitchen, olive oil has beauty benefits as well. Olive oil is a powerful antioxidant and contains fatty acids that can help soften, moisturize and grow your eyelashes and hair. By simply lightly brushing, or swabbing, olive oil on your lashes every day, you can expect to start seeing results in about a month. You can use a mascara brush (AKA a spoolie) or simply dab some oil onto a cotton ball or Q-Tip to gently coat your lashes.

If you don’t want to grab the olive oil straight from the pantry, you can buy a castor oil product online for the same effect. Biotin, Vitamin E oil, and coconut oil are also other alternatives.

Use a conditioning treatment

Eyelash conditioners are intended to moisturize your lashes and give them the nutrients to make them strong and long-lasting. This vitamin-infused mascara primer from Lancôme doubles as a primer before mascara, and can also be used as a conditioning treatment to put on overnight.

When using a primer or conditioning treatment, don’t expect to see lots of lash growth as a result --even though many products will claim this will happen as a result. It’s really designed to enhance the shape and size, not add a few centimeters to your every blink.

Get some green tea

There’s a few ways you can integrate green tea into your routine to start seeing the positive effects --and one way is simply to drink it. Green tea is packed with antioxidants and drinking it regularly can help prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. (Which explains why you see so many green tea-infused products in the beauty aisle.)

Additionally, you can use a chilled green tea bag and lightly apply pressure on your eyelids with it, or brew a cup of green tea, let it sit and cool for 10-15 minutes, and dip a cotton ball or Q-Tip and dab the liquid on your lashes and before you go to sleep. Since a case of six boxes (120 tea bags), cost less than $20, green tea is one of the more cost-effective ways to try growing your lashes.

Have a thorough makeup removal routine

Eyelashes are extremely delicate and should be treated as such, especially at the end of a long day (or night) where all you want to do is lay your head on the pillow and rest. It’s important to remove your makeup every night, but it’s just as crucial to do so gently.

Use an oil-based makeup remover (like the Milky Oil from Glossier) to carefully remove eye makeup as part of your bedtime routine, and have some extra makeup wipes or pads on hand for the extra lazy nights where sticking your head in the sink with your favorite foaming wash just isn’t happening. Something is better than nothing when it comes to removing makeup from your face and eyes before bed.

And while your getting ready, go easy on the eyelash curler as to not put too much strain on your lashes and avoid regularly using false lashes.

Invest in an eyelash growth serum

But make sure you do a little research first. There are many over-the-counter eyelash serums on the market, and not all of them are created equal. Read the fine print on the ingredients of any serum to make sure that the serum you choose is comprised of healthy ingredients.

For example, Pronexa Hairgenics Lavish Lash. Pronexa is hypoallergenic and made using botanically-derived compounds to stimulate eyelash and eyebrow growth or Terez & Honor Eyelash Growth Enhancer and Brow Serum which uses natural ingredients to nourish and enhance lashes and brows.

No matter which brand you choose, eyelash serum should be applied very gently, and you should also try a test spot and see if you have any immediate allergic reactions before going all in with the product.
