Savor the Last of Summer! 10 Things to Do Before Summer Ends

By mid-August, that end-of-summer feeling really starts to set in. But even though back-to-school is right around the corner, there’s still technically about a month of summer left. So don’t give up on warm weather fun just yet and if you haven't had the eventful summer you’ve hoped for there’s still time to squeeze in a few more of these adventures.

Hit the Beach

Whether it’s an ocean coast or a nearby lake, take a day to suit up, lay down a towel, and dig your toes into the sand. You can go swimming, rent a kayak or just soak up some rays. Whatever you decide to do, just make sure you bring some sunblock.

Go to a Fair or Festival

The last month of summer is a popular time for state and local fairs and festivals. They are a great way to get outdoors and enjoy some family fun. From carnival rides and games to animal exhibits, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Not to mention fair food is always delicious. Find a fair new you here.

Read in the Sun

Flying solo or need something quick, close, and/or cheap? There’s nothing simpler than the joy of reading outdoors. Just find a comfy spot outside and indulge in a good book while you get a dose of vitamin D. You can even give your eyes a break and lay back and listen to an audiobook.

Outdoor Yoga or Exercise

Get some exercise and some fresh air at the same time. Whether it’s a local outdoor class, a brisk jog, a HIIT workout, or just a Sun Salutation in your backyard, it’s even better outside. There’s plenty of time in the colder months to go to the gym, so take advantage of warm temps to get your blood flowing outdoors.

Throw a BBQ

Is it even summer if you’re not cooking outdoors? Whether you’ve used the grill a lot this summer or have barely uncovered it, don’t let the sun go down on summer without one last hurrah. Whether it’s a weeknight meal or a neighborhood party, keep the menu exciting with a new recipe or by trying a twist on an old favorite

Take a Hike

A hike can be anything you want, from a mountain climb to a leisurely stroll in the woods. The most important part is that you spend a little time communing with nature. Take in the sights and sounds of the great outdoors to relax and revive your spirit. Bonus points if you pack some food and enjoy an impromptu picnic.

Cloud or Star Gazing

Day or night there are good reasons to stare up at the sky. Let your imagination run wild to find shapes in the clouds or get more scientific and seek out specific constellations at night. Keep it simple with a blanket on the ground in an open space or invest in a telescope to get a close-up of outer space. Either way, it’s the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon or a warm summer night.

Plant Something

It’s not too late to do a little gardening. From late-season flowers or veggies that you can harvest in the fall to perennials that you can enjoy next spring. If you haven't had a chance to grow anything this season, there’s still time to do a little digging in the dirt for fun.

Outdoor Entertainment

Before the leaves fall find yourself an outdoor performance to enjoy. Think live music, magic shows, local theater, or even a drive-in, whatever you love. See what’s on your local event calendar and book a time to take a TV break and enjoy some entertainment outdoors.

Have a Bonfire

Visit a campground or build your own fire pit and spend some time watching nature’s television. Whether you’re telling stories, singing songs or just staring at the flames, sitting around a fire offers hours of entertainment. Of course, it also helps when there are s’mores. If a big fire is out of the question, a small backyard outdoor fireplace is pretty affordable and roasts marshmallows perfectly well.

Even in the waning weeks of summer, there are still plenty of ways you can celebrate the season. Just pick your favorite idea and get ready to make some memories that will last through the winter.
