The summer season is all about living your best life and enjoying activities that make the most sense to do when you’re embracing those warmer times and chiller vibes. But one common misconception about being able to fully enjoy summer is that you need to be surrounded by other people to have a good time.

What if you’re not feeling super social, but want to get out? Or, say there’s something specific on your summer bucket list that your friends aren’t available for? There’s no reason you can’t have a fun experience riding solo somewhere this summer that will make you feel fulfilled and even grateful for your time well spent alone.

Go kayaking or paddle boarding

Let’s face it –water-based activities like paddle boarding or kayaking are designed for one person and one person only! You don’t need a partner to paddle with or slow you down while you’re cruising along the water.

This is a relaxing activity where you can go at your own speed, enjoy the peace that the water and surrounding nature can bring, and partake in a different activity you simply can’t get on land. Pack some water and snacks, a waterproof case for your phone and personal belongings, and head out on your own adventure. Whether you want to fully unplug or snap some shots for the ‘gram along the way, take advantage of the peace and quiet in your own little boat (or board).

Tend to a plant or vegetable garden

If you live in a city or urban area, consider an opportunity to become part of a local, community garden where you can visit your plot of land and get creative with what you want to grow. There is a level of satisfaction in the process of gardening –from planting the seeds to seeing your final product come to fruition.

Whether it’s fresh flowers or herbs and vegetables, you will start to get the hang of it (everyone is a beginner at some point!) and constantly find things to do in the garden, from weeding to watering and more. If you don’t want to over commit, start small with a potted flower or some kitchen herbs.

Visit a town pool or Beach

Don’t have a pool at your home or apartment complex? Do a little research and see if there’s a town or neighborhood pool or beach where you can purchase a day pass and soak up the sun solo. There’s absolutely no shame in your suntan game when you can grab a lounge chair, toss in your headphones or dive into a good book without worrying about keeping up a conversation or anyone else’s schedule. Just be sure to bring something to protect your valuables while you’re there.

Even a couple of hours spent in the sun (with plenty of sunscreen, of course!) can energize you for the rest of your day and provide some much-needed Vitamin D before you move on to the next summer activity you might have planned.

Plan out a scenic bike ride

Bike riding, like paddle boarding or kayaking, is the perfect individual activity. In fact, it might even be better to take your bike out by yourself than to make sure you’re riding at the same speed as somebody else on your route.

Many cities offer a bike share program, where you can use an app to rent a bike for a few hours or the entire day, and then dock it back at your final destination versus having to ride it back to your original starting point. Or, if you have your own bike, you can map out a route that feels fun to you and load it up in your car or take off straight from home to see some beautiful summer sights and get a little exercise in at the same time.

Treat yourself to a spa day

If getting outdoors isn’t always your idea of a relaxing activity, consider treating yourself to a spa day where you can rest, recharge, and be pampered by a professional. There are some spas that offer full-day access to all of their amenities, giving you more time to enjoy the atmosphere before or after your spa treatment.

Spending the day in the spa can be leisurely when you choose a day and time where you have no one to see or nowhere to be. Dedicating a block of time where you can be by yourself and unattached from your phone will allow you opportunities to sit in a sauna, soak in a hot tub or take advantage of other spa amenities like steam rooms, fitness facilities, and retail shops where you can browse their collection of beauty products, apparel, and merchandise.

Take a spontaneous day trip

While at first it might sound intimidating to head out on the road alone, you can enjoy a little freedom when you get out of your comfort zone and visit a new place –just for the day. Before you decide where to go, think about some things you enjoy doing, and find a place that checks off some of those boxes. Sometimes, a change of scenery is just what you need to get inspired, reflect and brainstorm or find fun in discovering unique places.

If you like to shop, find an outlet mall with some of your favorite stores and do a little shopping for the day. For a foodie, a day trip to a cute little town with local restaurants and coffee shops would definitely satisfy your sense of adventure. If you’re a reader, grab a book and drive a bit to find a relaxing place to read outdoors. And once you put the destination into your GPS, listen to your favorite podcast, put your summertime tunes on blast and find comfort in enjoying the ride and going wherever the day seems to take you.
